Angelo State University was first founded in 1928 as a two-year junior college called San Angelo College for serving residents in Tom Green County. In 1963, the Texas State Legislature turned the college into a four-year senior public higher learning institution and changed its name. Today, Angelo State University enrolls more than 8,500 students as the second largest campus in the Texas Tech system. ASU spreads over 268 urban acres in San Angelo, a city within West Texas' Concho Valley, near Goodfellow Air Force Base. Across its six colleges, ASU offers both on-campus and online programs with a student-faculty ratio of 19:1.

For the seventh straight year, Angelo State University has been chosen as one of the Princeton Review's "Best 380 Colleges." ASU ranks 18th nationally for "Most Religious Students." The Military Times ranked Angelo State as the 42nd best university in the United States for veterans. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, ASU is among the top 100 universities to work for. Reaffirmed in 2013, Angelo State University has received 10-year regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS). ASU is properly licensed through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Several departments have also received discipline-specific accreditation. Angelo State University Application Requirements

With an acceptance rate of 89 percent, Angelo State University has selective admissions criteria that must be fulfilled. First-year freshmen must be high school graduates or homeschooled students in possession of a state-approved diploma. Students passing the General Educational Development (GED) test can be accepted. Following a college-prep curriculum with AP or IB classes is preferred. Applicants ranking in the top 10th percentile of their class don't need to present standardized test scores. At the graduate level, Angelo State's online master's programs mandate that applicants hold a four-year bachelor's degree. Graduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 hours of undergraduate studies are automatically eligible. Many programs will multiply applicants' GPA by 200 and add the average of three GRE subtests. Having a minimum formula score of 1100 is key.

M.S. Homeland Security

Offered 100 percent online in eight-week sessions, the M.S. Homeland Security program at Angelo State gives students the latest knowledge for joining law enforcement to fight crime and transnational terrorism. Within the 36-credit curriculum, students will study national security policy, criminal justice, border patrol, geographic information systems, agency ethics, intelligence analysis, and disaster preparedness. The program uses a holistic approach to resolving today's real-world homeland security issues. Credit can be given for students with military experience.

M.S.N. Family Nurse Practitioner

For registered nurses, the M.S.N. Family Nurse Practitioner program is available at ASU to unlock advanced practice roles providing primary care to patients across the lifespan. Although the online program limits on-campus attendance, students must reside in Texas for 600 hours of clinical practicum. The 49-credit curriculum includes courses in health policy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, health assessment, family care, mental health, epidemiology, informatics, and nursing leadership. Graduates have a 100 percent pass rate for FNP certification.

M.Ed. Guidance and Counseling

Consisting of 36 credits, the M.Ed. Guidance and Counseling program at Angelo State fulfills the requirements for taking the Texas Professional Certificate for School Counselors exam. The online program is ideal for students seeking careers in public school, college, or university counseling jobs. Coursework will delve into topics like lifespan development, curriculum design, group therapy, counseling theory, vocational counseling, and social influences. One semester of applied counseling practicum will be required.
