The SUNY Polytechnic Institute was initially formed in 1966 as the Upper Division College at Herkimer/Rome/Utica. Until 2003, the school focused on transfer and graduate programs in technological studies. Nearly a decade later, SUNYIT merged with the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University of Albany and was renamed. Endowed for $2.63 million, it's developed into New York's premier public, polytechnic research headquarters. From its 762-acre suburban campus in Marcy within the Utica Metro, SUNY Poly operates five academic divisions face-to-face and online. The SUNY Polytechnic Institute educates over 2,500 undergraduates, including freshmen, and 750 post-graduates yearly.

According to the U.S. News, SUNY Poly is the 18th best regional college, third top public school, and 10th most veteran-friendly university in the North. In particular, the SUNY Polytechnic Institute offers America's 110th best online MBA and 61st top online graduate business degrees. On Niche, SUNY Poly is recognized as the 172nd "Best College for Engineering" nationwide. College Factual honored SUNY Poly as the 35th top university for the money based on tuition and starting salary. Affordable Colleges Online picked the SUNY Polytechnic Institute as New York's third cheapest online college. The National Science Foundation also ranked SUNY Poly fourth nationally for engineering research spending at $369 million.

SUNY Polytechnic Institute Application Requirements

Getting an acceptance letter from the SUNY Polytechnic Institute isn't easy with the "selective" admission rate of 60 percent. First-time freshmen must have completed a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Curriculum prerequisites strongly abide for four years each of mathematics and science. Undergraduate applicants should hold a minimum "B" average during their college-prep coursework. On average, accepted Wildcats present a composite SAT score between 1000 and 1100 or ACT score between 22 and 24. Transfer students interested in SUNY Poly's online education can have up to 76 credits from regionally accredited schools with a 2.7 GPA or higher. However, nanoscale engineering majors should earn a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Consideration for SUNY Poly's online master's programs is only extended with a four-year baccalaureate degree from regionally accredited colleges. Many degrees, including the MBA, admit post-grads based upon an admission formula. Students must have at least 1,000 points after multiplying their undergraduate GPA by 200 and adding the GMAT score. Therefore, scoring at least 400 on the Graduate Management Admission Test is imperative. Nursing programs like the M.S. in Nursing Education look for a minimum 3.0 GPA, valid RN license, and over 2,000 years of bedside experience. International students must always score at least 79 on the TOEFL iBT or 6.5 on the IELTS.
