The University of Memphis is a public research university residing in Memphis, Tennessee. It is the Tennessee Board of Regent's flagship institution and is one of the largest postsecondary institutions in the state. The University of Memphis houses an array of colleges and schools and it hosts various centers of advanced research, such as the FedEx Institute of Technology and Advanced Distributed Learning Workforce Co-Lab. The university was established in 1912 as West Tennessee Normal School. It became West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925 and Memphis State College in 1941 when it expanded its liberal arts curriculum. The school gained full university status in 1957 and it changed its name to Memphis State University. It started offering doctoral degrees in 1966 and became the University of Memphis in 1994. Today, the University of Memphis is home to more than 22,000 students and 930 staff members on its historical campus of about 1,607 acres featuring 239 traditional and modern-style buildings. It offers 17 bachelor's degrees in over 250 areas of study, master's degrees in 54 fields, doctoral degrees in 26 disciplines, graduate certificate programs in 44 subjects, education specialist degree in two areas, and a Juris Doctor. The programs are offered through 13 colleges and schools: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Communication and Fine Arts, College of Education, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, Fogelman College of Business and Economics, Herff College of Engineering, Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management, Loewenberg College of Nursing, Graduate School, School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, School of Public Health, School of Health Sciences, and University College. The University of Memphis features an actual live tiger mascot, named Tom III. The university's motto is "Driven by Doing."

University of Memphis Application Requirements

Undergraduate

Tuition and Financial Aid

The University of Memphis charges tuition by the amount of credits taken in a specific year. The fees vary by undergraduate and graduate and campus-based and online programs. The UM Online programs charge a fee based on total credit hours as well as an online fee for in-state and out-of-state students. For example, an in-state student taking a total of one credit hour is charged a total of $412, whereas an out-of-state student is charged a total of $900. The maximum fee is 18 credits where an in-state student is charged $7,416 and an out-of-state student is charged $16,200.

The University of Memphis offers a variety of financial aid programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The financial aid programs apply to both campus-based and online programs. Grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study are among the available programs for students. The grants include the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant; TEACH Grant, and the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. The Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), Graduate PLUS Loan, are the available loan programs. The work-study programs are the Federal Work Study and regular student employment. Alternative loans are also available to students to assist with paying for degree programs.

Online Degrees Available

The University of Memphis Online offers a variety of online undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The programs provide students with the flexibility to complete their courses at any time and place that meets the needs of their busy lives. All online courses are offered asynchronously. The online graduate programs are offered through the individual colleges and schools. For example, a Master of Arts in History is available through the College of Arts and Sciences; a Master of Arts in Journalism is offered by the College of Communication and Fine Arts; the College of Education offers a Master of Science in Reading Education; the School of Health Studies offers a Master of Science in Health and Sports Sciences-Health Promotion; the University College offers a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies.

The Master of Arts in History program requires a total of 33 credit hours and a variety of courses in American history, European history, and global history are available to students. Upon completion of the degree, students will have the ability to pursue their love of history in an abundance of careers.

The Master of Arts in Journalism was one of the nation's first online master's degree programs in journalism. The accredited program prepares students for a wide range of journalism-related careers.

The Master of Science in Reading Education features in-depth instruction on the theories and teaching methods of literacy practices, policies, and assessment. After completion of program individuals will have the know-how to positively influence the lives of children. Graduates are prepared for numerous careers, such as reading specialists, literacy coaches, and curriculum coordinators.

The Master of Science in Health and Sports Sciences-Health Promotion is a 33 credit hour program that prepares students to promote healthy behaviors and implement best practices in health promotion.

The Master of Business Administration is intended for ambitious working professionals seeking to enhance their careers in the business field.

The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies enables students to customize an interdisciplinary plan of study. Students are able to meet personal and professional objectives. The program requires 33 semester hours for graduation.
