Holy Names University was founded in 1868 by the Foundation of Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Oakland, California. The school was founded when six nuns, members of a teaching order founded to educate the poor, who were invited by Father Michael King to establish a school for girls designed to educate teachers. In 1908, the name of the school changed to Convent and College of the Holy Names.

In 1917, the school became the Holy Names Junior College, one year after secular students were permitted to attend. Men were admitted only to the graduate division in 1955. The original Lake Merritt property where the school began was sold to the Kaiser Company in 1959 and a new campus created on Mountain Boulevard in Oakland Hills. The entire college became co-ed in 1971 and was renamed Holy Names College. The school gained university status in 2004.

Today, Holy Names University has an enrollment of 884. It has been ranked in the top 100 regional universities in the west by U.S. News & World Report and is also considered one of the top ten most diverse universities by the same publication. They are a founding member of the "Yes We Must Coalition" and the "Oakland Promise."

Holy Names University Accreditation Details

Holy Names University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission. The organization sets standards regarding institutional improvement, mission fulfillment and service not only to students but to the public. Holy Names University agrees to periodic evaluations to confirm that they are meeting or exceeding these standards, agreeing to make improvements where the organization identifies improvement is necessary. Programs throughout the university are also accredited by various industry-specific accrediting agencies.

Holy Names University Application Requirements

In order to attend Holy Names University, students must complete an application and submit official high school transcripts. Students must also provide official SAT or ACT scores. Students who have earned college credit after high school graduation may be admitted as transfer students. Students must complete the Common Application or may apply through the online university application. Students must provide an Academic Recommendation Form. Official ACT and SAT scores are required if the student is transferring less than 30 credits.

Graduate students must complete an application and submit official transcripts from all schools attended. Students must hold a bachelor's degree or higher in order to apply for graduate programs. Each graduate program has their own requirements for admission. Documents that may be required include recommendations, personal statements, interviews, a current resume and copies of valid licenses. Some programs require auditions or portfolios as well.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergraduate tuition at Holy Names University is $38,800 per year while part-time study of less than 12 credits is $1,331 per credit hour. Adult tuition is $724 per credit hour. Graduate tuition is $1,003 per credit hour.

Students must complete the FAFSA each year in order to qualify for financial assistance. California residents must also complete the CalGrant application in order to qualify for state grant funding. Students may qualify for federal or state grants as well as scholarships. Some scholarships are need-based while others are merit-based. Students may also qualify for federal work-study programs. Student loans are also available to help cover the cost of education, but it is important to remember that all loans must be repaid.

Holy Names University offers a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Nurse Administration that is available online. The program provides students with the knowledge necessary to manage complex departments in healthcare organizations. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)/Care Transition Management (CTM) Online

The Care Transition Management program offered through Holy Names University's online college is a Master of Science in Nursing program that is integral to patient satisfaction. Students develop an understanding of care quality and the use of healthcare resources. Students learn to work with families and patients to coordinate care in order to improve patient outcomes. Students manage the transition of care from inpatient to outpatient settings and assist patients in managing healthcare that include preventative, acute and chronic treatments. The goal of a Care Transition Manager is to improve quality of care as well as access to healthcare. A capstone course is required and students in the Care Transition Management program must also complete a Care Transition Management capstone and practicum.
