Mercy College private and non-profit university in New York. Mercy was historically affiliated with the Roman Catholic church, but the university today is nonsectarian. The university was founded in 1950. The curriculum retains influences of Jesuit educational principles that are mixed with the commitment to the liberal arts, professional programs and high-quality learning environments. Mercy College provides students with personalized opportunities to transform their lives and careers through higher education. Graduates are prepared to act responsibly in the world as they continue learning throughout their lives.

Mercy College has five main schools: School of Business, School of Education, School of Liberal Arts, School of Health and Natural Sciences and School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Together, they offer 90 bachelor's and master's degree programs that are taught by 200 plus professors. Most faculty hold the highest degree in their fields. Some are industry experts, Fulbright Scholars and national best-selling authors. There are about 5,000 full-time undergraduates and 4,000 graduate and specialized students. The student body is about 30 percent male and 70 percent female. Almost 56 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students and 95 percent of undergraduate classes have fewer than 30 students.

Mercy College Accreditation Details

Mercy College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs have been accredited by dozens of national organizations, such as the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the National Association of School Psychologists and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The Master of Science in Cybersecurity Program is approved by the National Security Agency Centers for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity Defense Education.

Mercy College Application Requirements

Students who apply for a graduate program must complete a graduate application, submit the nonrefundable application fee and their official undergraduate transcript. Supporting documentation may be required by specific programs such as resumes, test scores, personal statements and letters of recommendation. For example, the Master of Science in Cybersecurity Program will only accept undergraduates from non-technical fields if they complete specific prerequisite courses before classes start. These include classes in Statistics, Operating Systems, Local Area Networks, Database Management Systems and Cryptography and Computer Security. These students must provide two letters of recommendation evidencing professional qualifications and a two-page personal statement about their program motivations and expectations.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The tuition rates for graduate students will depend on the degree program. The Master of Business Administration program costs $891 per credit, the Counseling program costs $872, the Cybersecurity degree costs $891 and the Health Services Management degree program costs $872 per credit. There are graduate registration fees of $321 per term for students who are taking over 12 credits. Those taken fewer than 12 credits will pay $161 per term. Some graduate programs have separate fees, such as Graduate Nursing that charges $62 per term and Physical Therapy that charges $130 per term.

Mercy College has many options to help pay for college. First, there are federal and state grants that do not have to be repaid. The financial circumstances of the student's parents will determine eligibility and possible amount. Second, Direct Loans through the Department of Education of must be repaid, but will help pay for tuition and expenses. Third, private scholarships, such as fraternal societies and religious groups, will have specific criteria to qualify based on their organizational beliefs. Fourth, Federal Work-Study programs provide part-time employment in a variety of departments.

All incoming students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships based on their information and program of choice. Most scholarships require full-time enrollment, which is at least 12 credits per term for. All scholarship applicants must file a FAFSA to receive funds. Enrolled students may apply for university scholarships. These include the Mercy College Assistance Grant, which provides need-based tuition, as well as the Mercy College Provost Scholarship, which is limited to students with a high school rank of at least 80 percent. The Mercy College Presidential Scholarship is for students with a high school average of at least 85 and the Mercy College Trustees Scholarship – Transfers is for students with a 3.0 GPA.

Online Degrees Available

Mercy College offers over 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through 200 plus online courses. There are three types of online learning modes at Mercy College. First, a pure online course that is 100 percent distance education. Second, a blended course where students meet part of the time in a classroom. Third, a web-enhanced class that uses the online platform to supplement on-campus activities. Mercy College offers some of the following online master's degrees: Adolescence Education, Bilingual Education, Counseling, Cybersecurity, English Literature, Health Services Management and Organizational Leadership.

Master of Arts in English Literature

The Master of Arts in English Literature is for students who want to transition into college teaching positions or earn advanced writing degrees. Most of the students are English teachers who join the program for credentials, promotions and professional knowledge. Students explore theory and methodologies of literary criticism through eras, genres, culture, history and world literature. After graduation, students will possess the critical thinking and interpretive skills needed for reflecting knowledge, awareness of theoretical trends comprehension of important texts. Before graduation, students must research original topics through resources and databases to produce a final project.

Master of Science in Health Services Management

The Master of Science in Health Services Management is an accelerated program for current healthcare managers. The goal of the program is to enhance and improve the knowledge of working professionals. It takes about 18 months, or six semesters, to complete the program. After graduation, the student will be able to create strategic plans, implement improvement goals and manage healthcare information systems. They will clearly understand the ethical, political, financial and risk factors and issues that impact health facility decisions, personnel and operations. Students will be ready to adhere to regulatory guidelines, effective professional training programs and utilize oral communication skills to maintain quality, safety and efficiency.
