Concordia

Concordia University was founded by Lutherans as Concordia College in 1881 with 13 students in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. A permanent campus was purchased in 1882 on 31st Street, between State and Highland, but it was not until 1886 when Concordia received a perpetual charter from the state which allowed the school to provide classical, technical and religious instruction to young men who wished to prepare themselves for ministry in the Lutheran Church. For almost 80 years, the school offered high school classes and the first two years of a liberal arts college program.

A lay ministry was developed in the 1960s as well as co-educational programs designed for students who wish to become teachers, deaconesses or social workers for the church. Business and secretarial classes were also added to the curriculum. The Missouri Synod authorized Concordia to become a four-year accredited college and the school began offering degrees in teacher education, nursing, medical assistant and engineering.

In 1982, Concordia purchased the former campus of School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mequon which consisted of 192 acres along Lake Michigan. In 1989, Concordia was given university status and became the first university in the Missouri Synod College System.

Concordia University provides educational programs through the teaching of Jesus Christ. Students are provided knowledge in the written and spoken Word as well as in the programs they have chosen to study. Students are expected to serve the church and society throughout the world upon graduation.

Today, there are almost 8,300 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.
