Mid-America Christian University was originally opened in September 1953 in Houston by Dr. Max Gaulke with an inaugural class of 26 men as the South Texas Bible Institute. In 1955, it switched from three- to four-year education and became the Gulf Coast Bible College. First accredited in 1966, it formed a covenant with the Executive Council of the Church of God two years later. By 1985, the Mid-America Bible College was born after the 65-acre, eight-building Oklahoma City campus was dedicated.
