Regis University

Regis University is a large university that consists of five separate colleges. Each of those colleges emphasizes a different subject, including business and economics and health professions. Founded in 1877 as Las Vegas College, the original concept came from a group of Jesuits who wanted to offer classes for religious students. It later merged with Sacred Heart College and became the College of the Sacred Heart. As the college continued growing, it adopted the name of Regis College and then Regis University. It now has its headquarters in Denver, Colorado.

The university wants its students to learn how to help others, which is accomplishes through its volunteer experiences. Many students take part in a campus program that provides food, clothing and other items for the homeless living in and around Denver. Students also have the option of taking time off from school to help other charitable organizations. The university also formed partnerships with other institutions in Ireland and Mexico that emphasize the importance of bilingual education. These programs allow students to earn a graduate degree and improve their language skills. The nonprofit religious university has a total enrollment of more than 9,000 students, and according to U.S. News and World Report, Regis ranks as one of the best colleges in the American west.

Regis University Accreditation Details

Though the university lacked accreditation during its early years, it later sought accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). After a thorough examination of the university, the classes it offered, the success of its graduates and other factors, the HLC granted its accreditation. The HLC requires that all colleges renew their accreditation on a regular basis, and Regis established its own self-study committee to ensure that it passes each renewal phase. The university also obtained accreditation for a number of its degree programs. The program accreditation that the university now has comes from a number of organizations and accrediting bodies, including:

  • Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)
  • Accreditation Board for Applied Science, Computing, Engineering, and Technology (ABET)
  • Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)
  • Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM)
  • Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE)
  • Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE)
  • American Chemical Society Commission of Professional Training (CPT)
  • Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC)
  • Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC)

Regis University Application Requirements

Though Regis used a traditional paper application for a number of years, it switched to an online system in more recent years. Both graduate and undergraduate students can apply for admission using this system. The system requires that all prospective students create an account with a unique email address and password, but the system also allows students to create an account and log in with their Facebook information. The application itself is fairly simple and asks basic questions to determine whether a student is a good fit for the university. Students can expect to see questions about the classes they took as an undergraduate, the scores they received on the GRE or a similar standardized test and any fieldwork or practical experiences they might have.

In addition to filling out the application, students must also send in documents that verify the information they include on the application. They need to contact the testing board and have official scores sent to the university, arrange for their colleges to send official transcripts that show their cumulative grade point average and all courses they took and they may need to send in letters of recommendation as well. Regis requires that all documents arrive prior to the deadline listed on the school's website.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Regis University offers students the option of completing a graduate degree online or on its campus, but all students pay the same amount in terms of tuition. Tuition for the graduate program ranges based on the program. The Master of Science in Accounting program charges $780 per credit hours. Courses that students take can range from three credit hours to five credit hours. Students enrolled in some professional programs are also responsible for paying a fee for the exams they take in their final year, and the university charges all students fees for using laboratory equipment, the library and other campus resources.

Students can get financial aid after receiving an acceptance letter from Regis. Regis recommends that students immediately complete and submit the FAFSA after receiving that letter. This federal form asks questions about the financial status of the student or his or her parents, depending on the age of the student and whether the student is independent of his or her parents. Graduate students usually receive aid in the form of unsubsidized student loans. These loans accumulate interest as soon as the student receives one. Some may qualify for subsidized loans that do not accumulate interest until after the student finishes graduate school. Regis offers scholarships and other assistance as part of its standardized financial aid packages.

Master of Science in Accounting

The Master of Science in Accounting program available through Regis University prepares students for sitting for and taking the Certified Public Accountant examination. The CPA examination requires that applicants have a certain number of hours of classwork work. This test is available in all states and lets students obtain a certificate to work as a CPA in the state of their choosing. The program consists of 30 credit hours of work that students complete in two years. Regis requires that students take six specific classes before enrolling in the program, including courses on marketing auditing principles and intermediate accounting. Students who did not take those classes in the past will need to take the courses online or on campus before entering the accounting program.

All accounting graduate students take two core classes on accounting principles and 21 credit hours of electives relating to the field. The last requirement of the program is a capstone course, which is similar to a thesis class. This class asks students to create an accounting project or paper that demonstrates some of the skills they learned and topics they covered in their classes. Regis University also allows students in its accounting program to do internships as part of their studies.
